Cards on the table: I’m not a fan of eSports. Part of that comes from the fact that I’ve never really given it a proper chance, but I’m also not really sure I get the appeal. So imagine my surprise when a piece of eSports writing caught my eye this week.
Regardless of my personal feelings, eSports have become big business. Professionals, teams, sponsors, and live events are all becoming more common. Two live events took place recently, one for Super Smash Bros. and one for League of Legends, both of which Kotaku’s Maddy Myers attended. What struck her (and me) is how surprisingly tonally different the two events were. In an entertaining and informative read, the article she wrote compares her vastly different experiences attending both events within a week of each other.
