I discovered Into The Spine this week and I immediately found an article I wanted to share. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I love Shadow of the Colossus, but I don’t think I could love it as much as Gerard Howard does. Into The Spine’s tagline is “stories about video games and what they leave behind” and this article definitely lives up to it. The adoration pours off the page from every word of this personal story about anxiety and finding calm in the isolation of The Forbidden Lands.
I want to make special mention of the quality of the writing here. Shadow of the Colossus is well-trodden ground in games criticism, but the added dimension of a deeply special connection to the game made this piece feel fresh. It also gets pretty intense at one point in the article. The vivid description of an important life event was so well-written that I could imagine exactly how it felt, and how playing Shadow of the Colossus would definitely help alleviate it. This is a really good one, folks.
