I’ve been riding high since the announcement of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate earlier this week. While some may have enjoyed the speculation and fanfare of the roster reveal–every character in Smash Bros. history, with the Inklings, Daisy, and Ridley joining the fight–it’s been the Invitational that has drawn my attention and excitement.
This match–between Mang0, Armada, Abadango, and Plup–encompasses much of what I’ve enjoyed about this tournament: fun commentary, high tension, and some of the world’s best Smash players digging into a format they don’t normally play. Items and Smash Balls don’t normally make the cut for competitive play, so watching these players find their sea legs is something else.
Then Palkia shows up and even these players take a breather…just like you and I!
Then Bomberman shows up and nobody knows what’s going to happen.
And then and then and then.
Make no mistake: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is appealing to competitive players as much as it is casual fans. But in bringing these players together, to play with these rules, Nintendo created event television.
Gather around the water cooler and discuss the final moments between Plup and Mang0. You won’t regret it.
